‘How Does God Keep So Still?”

Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

1 Corinthians 13:1
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. (New International Version ©1984)

The idea for this song came from the verses above. I wrote the first line or so, then everything fell in place after that. Being still, is the primary way that I start the process of getting in touch with God. My brain and my body, however, always seem to have a million things going on and get in the way of the process. Especially at those times when we’re about to make a really bad decision, I believe God is out there shouting at us to get our attention, but it rarely happens. As we sometimes do with our friends and family, we’ve already tuned God out but it’s so easy to look at it from the standpoint that God is ‘keeping still’ when it was really us not paying attention or not asking for God’s guidance.

May you feel and recognize God’s hand moving in your life, today and always!

John

‘How Does God Keep So Still?’

Be still, my clanging gong of a body
God is always quite near
If you’re quiet enough, there’s a good possibility
You might actually hear
God’s voice as it speaks to you,
Comforts you through and through,
Or guides you along life’s short path
Consider the things you do,
Seen from God’s point of view
You could get lucky and hear God’s great laugh
Or is this a day when God nervously watches,
Hands tied by God’s gift of free will
As we make a decision that will alter our lives,
Bringing pain or disaster then ‘How does God keep so still?’

Await my slumbering, tired, weary body
Open your eyes come and see
That’s trying to show you, those who need help
God’s telling you, you might actually be
God’s words and voice on this day
Helping someone to find their way
Into God’s welcoming arms
Consider the things you do
Seen from God’s point of view
You could get lucky and see God’s great smile
Or is this a day when God sadly must turn his head
Hands tied by God’s gift of free will
As we keep God hidden inside
Hoarding love as our own
Leave them empty and yearning, then ‘How does God keep so still?’

Arise, my selfish, weak, lazy body
Get up, find something to do
Stop, look and listen,
God’s work is waiting
God’s worker is actually you
Be God’s hands and feet to someone
Help them get something done
They couldn’t do on their own
Consider the things you do
Seen from God’s point of view
You could get lucky and feel God’s great touch
Or is this a day when God’s heart will be broken
Hands tied by the gift of free will
As we walk past that person
Looking out for ourselves
Leave them hurting and needy, then ‘How does God keep so still?’
